4 Ways To Stay On Top Of Your Dental Health

 
 
  1. Regular Visits To The Dentist: One of the best ways to keep an eye on the health of those pearly whites is to visit your dentist regularly. Usually, a visit every 6 months for a cleaning and exam is recommended. However, your dentist may recommend a different interval of visits based on your teeth. At these visits, a dental hygienist will clean your teeth to remove the buildup of tartar that can happen over time. Also at this appointment, you may receive x-rays which help the dentist determine the health of your teeth. The dentist will also examine your mouth to check your gums, tongue, visual evidence of tooth decay, damaged fillings, and screen for oral cancer.
     

  2. Follow Treatment Plan: After your visit, you may be given a treatment plan. A treatment plan is a breakdown of your dental needs including how many visits and the cost to complete your treatment. It is very important to follow your treatment plan because dental issues will continue to worsen as time goes by. Avoiding treatment may increase the cost of treatment and even result in tooth loss.
     

  3. Establish Daily Routine: Your daily oral care routine is vital to your dental health. Twice a day you should brush your teeth for two minutes. Each time you brush your teeth you should also rinse your mouth with a fluoride rinse. Lastly, you should floss at least once a day. The best time to floss your teeth is going to be at the end of each day.
     

  4. Reduce Sugar Exposure: Each time your teeth are exposed to sugar it changes the ph level of your mouth and it becomes acidic. When your mouth is in an acidic state it causes a breakdown of the enamel on your teeth. The breakdown of enamel, commonly known as tooth decay is what cavities result from.  Each time you have sugar it takes your mouth about 30 minutes to reach its normal ph level again. If you expose your mouth to sugar often throughout the day then your mouth is in a continual state of acidity which can lead to cavities. That is why it is important to reduce the number of times you expose your mouth to sugar.
